Get a head start on all of your holiday shopping: The Junior League of Wilmington’s 34th Whale of a Sale is this Saturday, Nov. 12. It's located this year in the former Pathmark off U.S. 13 in New Castle, where as many as 3,000 shoppers are expected, many of whom camp out overnight.
Sale proceeds will support the Junior League of Wilmington’s mission and community programming.
Shoppers can peruse more than 200 new formal and wedding gowns, donated from Frank Bernard Ltd., all priced at $15.
There is also a huge selection of children’s clothing items, each priced at $2; a boutique section with clothing from designers such as Lilly Pulitzer, and accessories from Dooney & Bourke, Burberry, Kate Spade, Coach and more; $10 strollers and Pack ’n Plays; freshly cleaned couches for $35; linens, draperies and fabric for $1–$5, and much more.
The Junior League starts planning the sale during the summer, but only secured the Pathmark location three weeks ago, says Kristen Lutness, a member of the sale's committee.
The fundraiser, now held biennially, benefits the Junior League’s mission of training women to be leaders in the community, as well as its community programming, which is currently focused on promoting the health and well-being of girls aged 12–18 in the greater Wilmington area. Current projects include renovations to the common areas at the Delaware Adolescent Program Inc.—a high school program for pregnant teenagers that also provides prenatal care—as well as life-skills workshops at Bayard House, a residential program serving homeless and transitional pregnant minors.
