How to Have the Carefree Wedding of Your Dreams

There's one wedding trend that couples will continue to lean towards in 2019: the personalized, carefree wedding day. Brides-and-grooms –to-be still want to deliver an unforgettable experience to their friends and family, but would rather have a casual, no-pressure vibe on their big day. Here, La Vida Hospitality's catering director Kathy McDonald explains how southern Delaware is setting the standard for crafting the quintessential, carefree wedding.

If you're dreaming of a beach wedding…

Who wouldn't want to get married with their toes in the sand? Beach weddings are romantic, dreamy and perfect for the laidback couple whose main focus is creating a unique experience for their guests. Consider a ceremony by the ocean, followed by a reception at Big Chill Beach Club in Bethany Beach. "You can do something super-formal or a casual cocktail party with palm trees. A recent trend is the cocktail party reception with family-style food service. You still get that personalized service and you get the food out really fast," she says. "Plus, guests are able to dine interactively and at their own pace."

If you're dreaming of a food truck wedding…

The traditional wedding reception dining model—appetizers followed by a salad, main course and then dessert—is on its way out. Food trucks are very trendy and popular with couples and for good reason: they are a fun and cost-efficient way to wow your guests. There are so many options available, too: you can pay the truck owner up front and let guests order at their own pace; have multiple trucks, throw in some passed hors d'oeuvres and small plates; or have a food truck arrive just as the wedding is ending for a fun late-night snack option. "It serves as a little of a continuation of the event, the pictures are great and it's a nice base as guests head into Dewey Beach," says McDonald. Food trucks are also becoming popular options for rehearsal dinners, which, according to McDonald, are turning into more of a welcome party.

If you're dreaming of a small and intimate wedding…

If you have always wanted a backyard or barbecue wedding, you're not alone. There are plenty of perks to getting married at home, including feeling extremely comfortable, no decor restrictions and plenty of photos in all of your favorite sentimental spots. "Some couples don't have a large budget and want to avoid the venue fee," says McDonald. "And, many couples are paying for their own wedding," she says. If your parents have a great backyard or great beach house, you can create a lounge and a relaxed, casual atmosphere all while serving top-notch food and drink.
