In the early hours of Sept. 24, 2016, a row house fire in the Canby Park section of Wilmington took the lives of three veteran firefighters. Lt. Christopher Leach, 41, and Sr. Firefighter Jerry Fickes, 51, perished in the blaze. Sr. Firefighter Ardythe Hope, 48, died in the hospital 10 weeks later. This story of their final day was the most-read story we published on our website this year. We extend our continued deepest condolences to the families and friends of these three heroic individuals.
