Events You Can't Miss at the Coast This Weekend
The four hottest happenings at the beach from Nov. 17–19.
Chef Danio Somoza will be doing a cooking demonstration at the Bethany Beach Ocean Suites Food & Wine Festival on Nov. 18.
It’s time to break out your party shoes—and your ice skates—at the beach. Contrary to myth, the coast is a hotspot during the holidays. For proof take a look at what’s happening this weekend, Nov. 17–19.
On Friday, Nov. 17, SoDel Cares holds its third annual fundraiser at Fish On in the Villages at Five Points in Lewes. The nonprofit is the philanthropic arm of SoDel Concepts, which owns nine restaurants along the coast, including Fish On, and The Clubhouse at Baywood in Millsboro.
The event, which starts at 6 p.m., will raise money to benefit nonprofit organizations in the local coastal community. It also salutes the late Matt Haley, founder of SoDel Concepts, who in 2014 received the James Beard Humanitarian of the Year honor. Expect music, live and silent auctions, a signature cocktail and a light-fare menu created by Chef Doug Ruley, who’s cooked at the James Beard House four times. SoDel Cares suggests a donation of $25 at the door. For information, call Fish On at 302-645-9790.
Winter WonderFEST returns for a second year with grand opening events this weekend. The fun starts with “Dashing through the Show,” a 1-mile walk through the holiday light display at Cape Henlopen State Park at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17 and Saturday, Nov. 18. To participate, meet at the Christmas Village. (Gates open at 4 p.m.)
On Sunday, Nov. 19, you can walk or run the display with a 5K Run-Walk that starts at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., dogs on a leash are welcome to accompany owners through the show.
In addition to the light displays, the festival will feature carnival rides, games, a hospitality lodge, sponsored by Crooked Hammock Brewery, and an ice-skating rink. Last year, the event raised $150,000 and made $100,000 in community grants. Call the box office at 302-727-0221.
On Saturday, Nov. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m., the Bethany Beach Ocean Suites Food & Wine Festival will raise money for the Food Bank of Delaware. Held in Bethany’s newest hotel, the event will feature dishes from the on-site restaurant, 99 Sea Level, Bethany Blues, Fins Ale House & Ale Bar, NorthEast Seafood Kitchen, Sedona, U.S. Foods and Fork + Flask at Nage. There will be live music, a cooking demonstration by Chef Danio Somoza, a silent auction, music and door prizes. If you’re staying overnight, consider a festival package that offers $50 off a two-night stay at the hotel. Event tickets are $45.
Vegans, vegetarians and the veg-curious will once again gather for ThanksLiving on Sunday, Nov. 19., from 4 to 6 p.m., at Fork + Flask at Nage. This is the fifth year for the celebration, which is organized by VegRehoboth. The cost is $25. For reservations, call 302-226-2037.
