Beneficiaries

The primary goal of the Best of Delaware® party is to raise money for the beneficiaries. Delaware Today is proud to be working with three nonprofit organizations that make a positive difference for Delaware's children.

The first 2008 beneficiary is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware. Grounded in the mission to be the prime volunteer mentoring source for helping at-risk children, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware recruits and develops volunteer mentors and provides services to help children maximize their potential.

BBBS's School-Based Mentor Program was studied nationally, and the results revealed that mentors have measurable effects on children. For example, 64 percent of students developed more positive attitudes towards school, 38 percent achieved higher grades, 60 percent improved relationships with adults, and 56 percent improved relationships with peers.

The second 2008 beneficiary is Delaware Guidance Services for Children & Youth Inc., which provides comprehensive outpatient mental health services via a multidisciplinary treatment approach. Therapists offer quality services to every child in Delaware-regardless of their ability to pay.

The reasons families seek assistance from DGS vary; some stem from behavioral problems, impulse control problems like ADHD, troubles in school or substance abuse. Many children and families decide on their own to come to DGS, but the program is highly recommended by schools, doctors and community organizations.

In all cases, DGS boasts a team that tirelessly works to reduce the incidences of emotional problems in children.

The third 2008 beneficiary is the Delaware Children's Museum.  Opening in 2009, this will be a place that empowers kids of all ages, abilities, learning styles and backgrounds;  a place for school and other special groups to engage in science-focused, inquiry based exploration and learning.  The Museum will be a place that opens up a world of possibilities with always something new to discover - all in the spirit of imagination and adventure.
