Eat Some Beef at the Beach

Looking for a savory roast beef sandwich? Look no further than Murph’s.

After living near Rehoboth for almost 10 years, Joanne Ketler and Patricia Cipolloni saw a gap in the restaurant scene. There was plenty of seafood, but the married couple couldn’t find the type of roast beef sandwiches they loved from the Philadelphia area. Soon, the concept for Murph’s Beef & Ale kicked into gear. “It started as a conversation,” Ketler says. “We thought, why not jump in and give it a whirl?” They opened their restaurant/bar in Henlopen Square (37169 Rehoboth Ave. Extended, Rehoboth Beach, 212-5355, www.murphsbeefandale.com) on May 16, offering a simple, mouthwatering menu that focuses on USDA prime beef purchased from local Hickman’s Meat Market.

The beef is slow roasted daily and hand carved for tender results. The slices are then gently piled onto an Amoroso’s Kaiser roll. You can get it “Murphed” with aged sharp provolone cheese ($7.50) and add sautéed garlic broccoli rabe ($1.50). Chicken, pork, ham and a vegetarian option are also available. “It’s not DiNic’s,” says Ketler, referring to the famous Reading Terminal Market stand’s sandwich. “But it is similar.” Don’t miss the gravy fries. The sauce is made from scratch and is a cross between au jus and a pot-roast gravy with chunks of meat.  Free parking just spices up the deal.
