Gals that Give Raise Funds while Having Fun

Monthly girls night out reunites mothers, daughters, friends and benefits nonprofits in Kent County.

In its first year, Gals That Give raised nearly $30,000 for nine nonprofits in Kent County. But Gals offers its beneficiaries more than a cash infusion. The group aims to plug other local nonprofits into a larger network so that everyone benefits.

Plus, the monthly Girls Night Out gatherings are just plain fun.

“It’s not just a typical chamber networking event,” says Catrina Sharp, who handles public relations. “It’s mom and daughter, or moms catching up with each other. It’s friends hanging out with friends and chatting.”

The two-hour dinners are held the third Thursday of the month at The Outlook at The Duncan Center in Dover. For $25, each attendee gets a three-course dinner with an appetizer and dessert. (A cash bar is available.) A silent auction of items donated by local businesses is held, along with a 50/50 raffle. All the money goes to the charity of the month, which makes a presentation about its work during the meal.

Gals That Give typically raises between $2,000 and $4,000 an event, but it brought in $5,790 during its July dinner for Foundation for a Better Tomorrow, which helps Delawareans impacted by mental illness and disabilities.

Sharp credits the many local businesses that regularly contribute auction items such as Phillies and Eagles tickets, fitness classes, jewelry and even brewery tours.

“It’s really cool how the businesses have pulled together,” she says.
