Art and Soul

Art galleries and exhibitions in Delaware this fall.

LEWES

Abraxas Studio of Art Lewes’ native son Abraxas Hudson demonstrates an uncanny ability to incorporate otherworldly light into local, international and fanciful scenes. (And you can, too—he’s now offering art classes.) 645-9119, abraxasart.com

Art for a Purpose Located on the walls of Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s International Realty, the gallery sells donated artwork and distributes proceeds to charities. 245-4528, artforapurpose.org

Cape Artists’ Gallery The Third Street co-op spotlights the Cape Artists group, which meets regularly to paint together and hold critiquing sessions. 644-7733, capeartists.org

Peninsula Gallery A longtime patron of the gallery, Dr. B.J. Clark purchased it in 2012, when he retired to Lewes. The 3,000-square-foot space, now in its 17th year, features local artists, as well as national and international artists. Beginning Oct. 5, the gallery will spotlight British artist Roger Dellar, a modern impressionist. The show runs through October. 645-0551, peninsula-gallery.com

The Petite Gallery  This shop along Savannah Road features one-of-a-kind, artisan-made carpets, home furnishings, design services and an interesting collection of fine art.  645-9047, jkltd.com

The Studio on 24 Glass artisan Deb Appleby’s shop is off Del. 1 on John J. Williams Highway (Del. 24). Hours change depending on the season, but the studio is also open by appointment. 644-4424, thestudioon24.com

REHOBOTH BEACH

Amendaline Gallery Pittsburgh native Jeanne Ponko, an art consultant for 25-plus years, opened the gallery in 2006 after moving to the beach full time. In addition to paintings, you’ll find hand-blown glass, floor cloths, ceramics and art accessories, including frames. 226-0330, amandelinegallery.com

Anita Peghini-Räber Gallery Expressionist Peghini-Räber, who grew up in Switzerland and France, is the owner and the featured artist of the gallery, but she also features other artists in a wide range of mediums. The gallery hosts monthly Milongas (tango dances) all year. 227-2888, rehobothart.com

Gallery 50 Contemporary Art & Frame Shop Here you’ll find contemporary works from local, national and a few international artists, including paintings, sculpture and mobiles. Beginning Sept. 20, the gallery will feature the edgy work of former Baltimore Oriole Scott Christopher. 227-2050,
50contemporaryart.com

Juleez Artist Julie Borden relocated her gallery to the beach on a whim, and the city and her vivid creations seem in perfect harmony: She turns cellos, violins and other musical instruments into displayable—and still playable—artwork. 227-3792, juleez.com

Kevin Fleming Delaware Art Gallery Photographer Kevin Fleming, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, has furnished his Rehoboth Avenue shop with his vivid wildlife and landscape shots. (He’s now offering limited edition prints.) The gallery also sells photography by his son, Jay Fleming, and Tony Pratt and Pam Aquilani. 800-291-7600, delawareartgallery.com

Philip Morton Gallery The longstanding gallery features works by local artists, including Aina Nergaard and Tara Funk Grim, as well as regional and national artists. In cooperation with “sister” Gallery 50, Philip Morton beginning Sept. 30 will feature contemporary paintings by Elizabeth Christopher, whose husband Scott’s works will be at Gallery 50. 727-0905, philipmortongallery.com

Ocean Gallery Although not as wild and colorful as its sister store on the Ocean City, Md., boardwalk, the Rehoboth location is the place to find a colorful souvenir you can hang on the walls. 226-9507, oceangallery.com

Rehoboth Art League Now celebrating its 75th birthday, RAL will feature the work of Jean Doran, Laura Hickman and Steve Rogers through Sept. 29. 227-8404, rehobothartleague.org

Ward Ellinger Gallery An alternative to watercolors of beach scenes, artist Ward Ellinger’s contemporary work is a mélange of bright color, texture and shapes. 227-2710, wardellinger.com

THE QUIET RESORTS

Ellen Rice Gallery The celebrated artist opened this Ocean View shop more than 10 years ago to exhibit and sell her own work, but she also offers jewelry, garden sculpture, candles and cards by other artists. 539-3405, ellenrice.com

Gallery One Owned and operated by artists in the Delaware-Maryland area, the Ocean View gallery each month focuses on a theme. In September, it’s “Early Morning.” There are also classes and workshops. 537-5055, galleryonede.com

Ocean Gallery The Fenwick site for the Ocean City institution. 539-2300, oceangallery.com
