Sussex Outdoors: Nemours Health and Prevention Services

… and More Good: Take it Outside

Reacting to the report that Delaware children spend mere minutes a day outdoors and nearly 43 hours per week in front of television and computer screens, people in Sussex County are rising to the occasion.

Spearheaded by Gov. Jack Markell and Nemours Health and Prevention Services, Sussex Outdoors is an awareness campaign focused on encouraging families to engage in more outdoor activities and to lead more physically active and healthier lives.

“Sussex Outdoors connects the dots between where people work, live, learn and develop,” says spokesman John Hollis of Nemours. “Creating an interconnected system of opportunities in which to be physically active increases utilization, and in the long run, leads to healthier living.”

Creating this system, Sussex Outdoors endorses organizations like Walkable, Bikable Delaware, a project to connect and improve the quality and safety of the county’s walking and biking trails. Implementation of such projects will make it easier for people to travel in a fun, healthy and physically active way.

Working with local schools, Sussex Outdoors will teach kids to make healthier choices by establishing exploratory programs that take them outdoors. These programs will introduce kids to outdoor areas and suggest physical activities that can be done there.

Sussex Outdoors aims to reverse current trends and increase the amount of time kids spend outdoors rather than glued to video games and television.
