Elena Delle Donne: University of Delaware Women's Basketball and Fabulous Housewives

From the Managing Editor: Housewives and Hens—Go Girls!

I grew up in Lewes, and I still have friends and family there. And although I’ve lived in Newark for more than 20 years, I remain a downstater at heart.

So you can imagine my disappointment when we received criticism about our Fabulous Housewives feature that ran in the May issue. My problem didn’t stem from the fact that I wrote the piece. I just felt bad because some folks thought we purposely snubbed women from the southern part of the state. That was not the case.

So, in honor of my downstate homies, this month we give you the Fabulous Housewives of Kent and Sussex.

I enjoyed writing this piece and I hope you will enjoy reading it.

Speaking of downstate, be sure to check out this month’s Fall Beach Guide. Freelance writer Pam George did an excellent job, as usual, of bringing us the latest on the beach dining scene. We thank her for sniffing out 19 great dining deals during the offseason. She also lent her expertise to review three popular restaurants in Rehoboth Beach. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

And our own Katie McCabe pitched in to share some of the best of arts and entertainment at the beach. Be sure to read her calendar.

Finally, kudos to longtime writer Bob Yearick. “Ace” lived up to his nickname with his profile of UD basketball star Elena Delle Donne.

Our family went to a UD women’s game last season and had a blast watching Delle Donne and her teammates. Just seeing her in warm-ups hitting long-range bombs from well beyond the three-point arc was worth the price of admission.

And the really neat thing was that after the game we stood in line with dozens of other fans to get the autographs of all of the Hens’ players—who were very gracious after a hard-fought victory.

We actually had to wait quite a while, thanks to a post-game visit to the Hens’ locker room by Vice President Joe Biden, but we won’t hold that against the veep. Besides, he had been a great sport during halftime, when at least two dozen folks approached him for photos and autographs.

UD president Patrick Harker, seated next to Biden, actually handled picture-taking duties for a number of people.

We wish the Hens luck again this season. My kids (and I) will always cherish the experience and the autographed team poster.

Now, which housewives are more fabulous—upstate or downstate?

Just kidding.

Team Notes

Mark Nardone
Having spent all my beach vacations in Fenwick Island, a week with the family in Sea Isle City, N.J., was a departure. I liked Sea Isle, loved my family time, but I still like the Delaware beaches much, much more. To my eye, they’re far more beautiful.

Katie McCabe
As I mentioned in this space before, I’m not a regular on Wilmington’s Art Loop. But I recently got an invite from a friend and checked out The Creative Vision Factory on Shipley Street. If it’s not one of your usual stops, make it one. You’re missing out on some real treasures—the artwork and the artists.

Kelly Carter
The magazine has photographed Elena Delle Donne three times since I’ve been here. Each time I meet her she is more well-known and has added to her long list of achievements. But I’m amazed at how poised and nice she is. Although she was more practiced at being photographed this time (ahem, Sports Illustrated) she was still very down-to-earth.

Louise Bolin
I recently attended “Cowboy Monkey Rodeo Night” at the Wilmington Blue Rocks. This year the rodeo was held on a Friday and Saturday night, both of which had fireworks! Team Ghostriders consists of little monkeys riding dogs while herding rams after the fourth and seventh innings and after the game. You have to go next year!

Drew Ostroski
I recently spotted a crop duster darting over a cornfield. So I took some photos and later realized that the plane was from Allen Chorman & Son Inc. Allen used to spray the field behind my home in Lewes when I was a kid. On this day, it was Allen’s son, Jeff, who was piloting the plane. I had the pleasure of interviewing father and son in the 1990s for this magazine. This is one of the many reasons I love Delaware.

Ron Dubick
Reading Bob Yearick’s terrific story of Elena Delle Donne’s road to success as a star athlete with great life values was very inspiring. Delle Donne has been photographed for national sports magazines and big city publications and I wanted my images of her to stand out. I wanted to show her confidence and she went along with my in-the-hoop idea.
