Director Raye Jones Avery calls education in the arts a “unique lens” for the personal exploration that leads to greater self-awareness and for understanding how we relate to each other. With an emphasis on reaching people from impoverished backgrounds, CCAC offers instruction in visual and performing arts in music, vocals, dance, drama and visual arts. If you want something different, like zumba, this is the place. “The act of exploring one’s own creative voice really taps into centers of learning that other forms of education don’t get at,” she says. CCAC promotes self-development, healthy lifestyles, social change, educational success and economic empowerment. Occasional training institutes help professional artists learn and grow as entrepreneurs. Wilmington, 652-0101, ccacde.org
