Smyrna is an historic small town that’s conveniently located 12 miles north of Dover and about 30 miles south of Newark and Wilmington. Residents work diligently to maintain its family friendly atmosphere and historical integrity, but the town, in terms of new physical and technological infrastructure, is preparing for future development. New businesses have been sprouting for years, but a good number of them came to life in 2006. Since then, a variety of retail opportunities have flourished, as have cultural organizations like the Smyrna Museum and the refurbished Smyrna Opera House (circa 1887), which houses a theater and an impressive art gallery. Smyrna sports enthusiasts have easy access to hunting areas as well as Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, and enjoy local events like Duck Creek Days. New subdivisions and townhouse communities have contributed to a rapid population surge in recent years. Prices are among the most affordable in the state. The area (including Clayton, Kenton and other neighboring areas) is served by Smyrna School District.
