The largest city in the state geographically, Dover is Delaware’s state capital and the county seat, so it bustles with government workers in Legislative Hall and other state buildings. The town exhibits fine examples of Colonial architecture around The Green, a historic former marketplace, as well as beautiful Victorian homes on Governors Avenue and State Street in the neighborhood of Wesley College. Dover is home to Delaware State University, one of the country’s top historically black colleges. First State Heritage Park links historical and cultural sites in the capital city, including the Delaware State Archives, the Biggs Museum of American Art and the Johnson Victrola Museum. The Delaware Agricultural Museum is a must-see. Every June and September, Dover becomes NASCAR country, hosting thousands of fans at Dover International Speedway. Dover Air Force Base and Kent General Hospital are among the largest employers in the area. Dover is served by the Capital School District.
