New Castle

Though New Castle is home to a variety of neighborhoods, its heart is historic Old New Castle, a pre-Revolution port town on the Dcelaware River that boasts splendid Colonial, Dutch and Federal architecture. Established in 1651, it Delaware’s first capital until 1777, and the famous courthouse that served as the seat of government still stands on Delaware Street. Its historic integrity is maintained in many buildings, including the Dutch House, the Amstel House and the Van Dyke House, historic churches such as Immanuel on The Green, and the octagonal, Frank Furness-designed Old Library. The George Read House & Gardens, on a scenic street known as The Strand, was built in 1801 by the son of one of Delaware’s signers of the Declaration. There is a real cobblestone street in Old New Castle, and residents and visitors love its handful of antique and collectible shops, taverns, events and Battery Park along the Delaware River.
