Lewes, on the shore of Delaware Bay, traces its founding to Henry Hudson’s exploration of the Delaware Bay. Today it is known for its balance of historic charm, beach living and 21st century commerce. The town offers a lovely Victorian and Colonial homes, as well as plenty of bungalows. The Lewes Historical Society has created a noteworthy history trail, and institutions such as Zwaanendael Museum are cultural icons. New neighborhoods are sprouting on former farms on beautiful New Road and Gills Neck Road, but plenty of fields and marsh remains. Cape Henlopen State Park, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the state’s most beautiful sights. Beebe Medical Center is a major employer. Find excellent shopping and dining on Second Street, and community events such as the annual Blessing of the Fleet, holiday parades and seasonal caroling. Annual home and garden tours attract visitors from the tri-state region. No Little League in the state has a better view—Lewes’ filed is right on the Rehoboth-Lewes Canal. Across the canal is Lewes Beach, a laidback summer community. Lewes is served by Cape Henlopen School District. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is a major attraction.
