Georgetown, just east of U.S 113 and U.S. 9, is the Sussex County seat. The center of town is built around The Circle, a colonial convention that encompasses Town Hall, state and county buildings such as the historic county courthouse, and the renovated Brick Hotel. The downtown area also offers some colonial homes and stately examples of Victorian architecture. Georgetown is best known for Return Day, a semi-annual festival and ceremony held the Thursday after Election Day. The main event is the Burial of the Tomahawk, where losers and winners make nice by literally burying a hatchet, and Sussex County’s party chairmen officially ends Delaware’s political season. Georgetown is 15 miles from the Delaware beaches. A campus of Delaware Technical and Community College is on Del. 18 west of the town center. Sussex Central is its public high school.
