Local Teen Records Pop Song for Hollywood Film

Sofi Tyler, 15, flew to Los Angeles to make a music video for “High Strung,” a romantic drama.

Sparks fly when a street-smart violinist and classical dancer team up to win a hip-hop competition in “High Strung,” a film that debuted in April. But the movie, which is packed with heartthrobs, has a Delaware subtext. Tatnall School student Sofi Tyler, 15, recorded the catchy pop song “Monotony” for the film. She flew to Los Angeles to make the video. “I really didn’t know what to expect,” she says. “I had a lot of fun, but it was a lot of hard work.” The crew of about 50 people toiled from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A video might be a new experience for Tyler, but she’s no stranger to the camera. Her mom, Toni Toomey, is a photographer and a former salon owner. “I’m always taking pictures, and she’s really comfortable in front of the camera,” Toomey says.

Tyler was just 7 when she saw an ad seeking young talent and dialed the number on the screen to get more information.

Tyler has taken voice, acting and some dance lessons. She recorded her first album at age 9 and has performed at the Wilmington Flower Market and World Cafe Live at the Queen.

Toomey is friends with JoJami Tyler (no relation), whose sister, Janeen Damien, directed “High Strung” with her husband, Michael. The couple selected “Monotony,” written by Mark Mangold, for Sofi Tyler to record. She was scheduled to perform the song at the film’s opening at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater, which would put her in good company. Jane Seymour is one of the movie’s stars.

Tyler is just getting started. “I want to make more music videos, perform more and write more songs,” she says. She also plans to go to college.

Toomey and JoJami Tyler are working to get the movie shown in Delaware. Until then, the video can be found on YouTube.
