Shop at Great Stuff Home, Support DBCC
Talleyville shopping center gives patrons opportunity to donate and shop for a cause.
Bagging great bargains is even more rewarding when you are shopping for a good cause.
Shoppers will find quality furniture and accessories at the recently opened Great Stuff Home, the sister shop of Great Stuff Savvy Resale, which debuted in 2010. Staffed by dedicated volunteers, both shops sell donated items to raise money for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC).
“Savvy Resale was so successful we decided to open a furniture annex,” says Dale Maahs, who manages the original resale shop.
Great Stuff Home is located in Talleyville Shopping Center in North Wilmington, a few steps from the Savvy Resale shop. The new shop is managed by Barbara Eckels, who brings years of retail furniture sales experience to the venue.
Within its pastel pink walls, shoppers will find furniture, rugs, fine china and glassware, lamps, mirrors and other accessories. A few recent finds: an oak Hoosier cabinet, circa 1920, complete with built-in sifter, $600; a marble-topped bombe chest with ormolu hardware, $295; and a bistro table with two chairs, $395.
Inventory turns over quickly, so expect to find something new every time you visit. Discounted home delivery is offered in New Castle and Kent counties through Hopkins & Sons moving company of New Castle. For furniture donations, free pickup also may be available. Please inquire for details.
Don’t see exactly what you are looking for? Don’t hesitate to speak up. Shoppers can establish and update wish lists of specific items.
“We email or call to let customers know when something comes in that fits an item on their wish list,” Eckels says. “We will even take a picture and email it to them.”
Great Stuff also hosts Sip-and-Shop events in which groups of 15 people or more can reserve the shop for a personalized shopping experience. Shoppers enjoy an evening socializing, enjoying refreshments and shopping at both shops. Since its opening, Savvy Resale has raised more than $150,000 for DBCC. Shoppers also can learn more about breast cancer through literature distributed at the shop. Many of the volunteers are cancer survivors.
It’s a win-win-win. Shoppers are introduced to DBCC and its programs for those touched by breast cancer in Delaware. Customers benefit by buying brand-name goods at accessible prices. And donors get the satisfaction of supporting an organization that is focused on
“If people can’t write a check to DBCC, they can feel good about donating items or buying something,” Maahs says. “We aren’t just a retailer. We’re a community resource.”
