Drink of the Week: Irish Coffee
Get in the St. Patrick's Day spirit!
Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, the holiday that honors the patron saint of Ireland. But Joe and Shirley Sheridan celebrate March 17 honestly. They are natives of Dublin who immigrated to the United States in 1995, and have operated their restaurant, Sheridan’s Irish Pub (44 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, 659-5566), since 2004. It’s a place that celebrates the Emerald Isle all year long with offerings like shepherd’s pie and corned beef and cabbage. The couple goes all out for St. Paddy’s Day, though, with a block party on March 12 and a family-style affair at the restaurant on the actual holiday (a Thursday this year), with a full Irish breakfast ($11.95) and music. If you can’t wait, try their Irish coffee now, recipe courtesy of Shirley Sheridan:
Sheridan’s Irish Coffee
- 1 ½ ounce whiskey (see note)
- 1 teaspoon granulated brown sugar
- Steaming hot coffee
- Heavy cream
Warm Irish coffee glasses. Add whiskey and brown sugar to a glass. Pour in enough hot coffee to fill the glass three-quarters full. Stir ingredients. Add enough heavy cream to top off the drink. Serves one.
