Dover Motor Speedway Charts a New Course in Kent County

Dover Motor Speedway honors the past while looking to the future with interactive experiences and events.

Dover Motor Speedway, Kent County’s longstanding venue—nicknamed the Monster Mile—has held at least one NASCAR Cup Series race each year since 1969, including two per year from 1971 to 2020. While the speedway plans to continue this time-honored tradition (they will host the races again April 26 to 28), some upcoming events promise to usher in a new crowd.

Interactive experiences this spring will promote more community involvement. Laps for Charity invites participants to drive their personal vehicles around the World’s Fastest One-Mile Oval to raise funds for Speedway Children’s Charities, Dover Motor Speedway Chapter. Thrill-seekers might opt for a more competitive challenge with the NASCAR Racing Experience, where participants receive the necessary training and instruction to race independently around the track (multiple dates; nascarracingexperience.com).

From June 7 to 9, Goodguys Rod & Custom Association’s legendary car show will present “thousands of candy-colored hot rods and customs, tricked-out trucks, mighty muscle cars and regal classics” for an anticipated 30,000 to 40,000 attendees (good-guys.com). Gary Camp, VP of marketing and communications, says they’ll use pretty much every nook and cranny of the property. “That’s a brand-new event that is certainly great for the economy and tourism,” he says. “A lot of people who have probably never been to Delaware will be here for the first time.”

As the year draws to a close, the speedway will host its annual Gift of Lights. This tradition runs every evening from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, with more than 60 scenes and 3.5 million lights set up along an almost two-mile pathway winding through the campgrounds (giftoflightsdover.com).
