Summer Fashion Trends
Go glam with halter-top bikinis, bangles, Panama hats and faux tattoos.
Relax. Buying swimwear doesn’t have to be a nerve-racking rite of summer. We’re here to help you dip your toe into the proverbial deep end with some swimwear and accessories tips from local boutiques.
IN THE SWIM
When it comes to bikini tops, think high, as in high necklines. Karen Brennan, store manager of South Moon Under in Rehoboth Beach, recommends making a statement with an embellished PilyQ Gypsy Hi-Neck halter bikini (South Moon Under, $158). Or ease into the trend with a PilyQ Sunbeam embroidered halter top (South Moon Under, $150). “Super cheeky bottoms are another must-have this summer, and Billabong and Mara Hoffman have cut sets for around $150,” Brennan says.
When picking out a swimsuit, have fun with color and texture. This year’s color palette runs the gamut, so whether you gravitate toward neutral or bright, you’ll have plenty of options. “We’re seeing white and lacy, neon, 3-D prints and oil-painted patterns,” says Nickk Sansone, manager of Tiger Lili in Rehoboth.
Brennan also suggests sparkling up your beach look with Flash Tattoos (South Moon Under, $22 for four sheets). These temporary gold- and silver-hued tattoos can mimic bracelets, necklaces and more. The creative design possibilities are endless. And it’s a great way to get the jewelry look without worrying about losing your favorite earrings or ankle bracelet in the sand.
FROM BEACH TO BOARDWALK
When it comes to taking your look inland, think Bohemian and gypsy. “Rompers are going to be your best friend this summer,” says Brennan. “We love anything that is stylish and easy. Throw one over your bikini for a day at the beach. Then, layer on jewelry or add heels for a night-out look.”
Dress up your romper with a Chan Luu Wrap Bracelet (South Moon Under, $184) for effortless boho chic or gypsy bangles and necklaces (Tiger Lili, $29-$72.99).
Complete the look with a pair of gladiator sandals (South Moon Under, Free People, $68) and a colorful beach bag or make a statement with a bold graphic print bag.
Panama Hat - Shield your face from the sun and camouflage messy beach hair with an iconic Panama hat. A favorite of icons Ernest Hemingway and Paul Newman, this unisex traditional brimmed straw hat ($58) never goes out of style. Although it comes in a variety of colors, we recommend going with a neutral color so you can wear it with a multitude of outfits thus getting more bang (and compliments) for your buck. Available at J. Crew, Christiana Mall, www.jcrew.com.
