Top Dentists 2013: Todd Rowen, General Dentistry
As someone who completes two to three times the state requirement of 30 hours every two years, it’s safe to say Rowen knows his stuff.
If it’s an overstatement to say that dentist Todd Rowen of Wilmington oozes humility, one can certainly say he seems modest enough. Soft spoken and avuncular, he was far and away the popular choice for best general dentist. The reason is simple enough: “I love my patients,” Rowen says.
Rowen has practiced dentistry for 33 years. A youthful interest in model building taught him to use his hands and love of craft. Meeting his best friend’s cousin, longtime dentist David Ehrenfeld, showed him what the profession was all about. A major in biology at the University of Delaware led him to dental school at the University of Pennsylvania. Instead of choosing a specialty, Rowen chose general dentistry because of its diversity.
“I enjoyed the different aspects of it,” he says. “I didn’t want to be pigeonholed in any one procedure.” Nonetheless, he especially enjoys restorative dentistry. “You’re building something, creating something, and it has an impact on a person’s health,” he says. “Ability to eat is a good thing.”
On the eve of a seminar about anterior implant aesthetics, Rowen mentions that he enjoys continuing education so much, he completes two to three times the state requirement of 30 hours every two years. He’s been part of the same national study group on gold dentistry for well over 15 years. Professionally, he says, he can’t think of anything else he’d rather do. He’s had some patients for so long, “it transcends the doctor-patient relationship,” he says. “You become like family.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by his administrative assistant, Andrea Houser. She has worked for Rowen for 17 years. “I’ve met some amazing people here,” Houser says. “I get to meet people from all walks of life. I get to help them. And they help me. I can’t explain the chemistry, the dynamic, but I think that’s what makes our team special.”
Rowen would agree.
“I’ve been blessed to have a great staff. They are the reason for the office’s popularity. They’re just very friendly, open people.” He smiles. “I guess you’d say they’re people people.”
