PrintSIW Vegetables: A Farmers Market in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania
Open: June-October Short for “Stepped in What?,” SIW Vegetables is better-known as “Haskell’s” for the 101-year-old family farm that supplies the wares. Corn is grown across the street and picked two to three times a day. “What we don’t sell that day we give to the Food Bank,” says owner H.G. Haskell. Bill Hoffman of William & Merry, the Hockessin restaurant, is a “huge fan” of the tomatoes. “Come July or early August, they have so many different kinds of heirlooms,” he says. The flavor secret: Heirlooms are too tender to ship, so they’re grown for swift consumption.
CSA: Runs June through October
Don’t miss: The farm grows 15 different varieties of corn. “So much work goes into the breeding,” Haskell says. Most of us grew up on white, but don’t miss Haskell’s yellow, which is now just as sweet, he says.
