Community News

This month, community theaters bid adieu to another great season. Herein: a roundup.

The Arden Club Theatre will perform “Prelude to a Kiss” at the Milton Theatre this month.Wilmington Drama League will stage the ambitious “Seussical The Musical” June 19-28, thus confirming why it’s not nice to make fun of short people. The ever-dedicated Chapel Street Players will mount Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s “The Man Who Came To Dinner” June 12-27, a comedy that explains how weird things happen when you invite weird people into your home. June 12-21, Possum Point Players will present “Stinkin’ Rich,” a farce that explores mistaken identities. At the Milton Theatre June 12-13, Arden Club Theatre will offer “Prelude to a Kiss,” Craig Lucas’ romantic tale about soul transference. (Be careful who you kiss.) And Kent County Theatre Guild will do “The Decorator” June 12-27.  The premise: Marcia is fooling around with a married guy, so when his wife shows up, she begs her decorator to pretend he’s her husband. Roslyn Kind will perform two shows at the Milton Theatre on June 6. Why is this important? Kind has forged a successful career from Broadway to London and is a regular on the TV sitcom circuit. And—oh, yeah—Kind is Barbra Streisand’s sister. There’s no mistaking the similarity in the sisters’ styles, though Streisand’s soprano is more distinctive while Kind’s alto is richer and reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald. The two share the same Brooklyn parlance. Expect brassy humor and serious crooning. Call 684-3400, or visit miltontheatre.org.

The African American Festival Positively Dover is more than a signature Dover event. Held on Legislative Mall June 27, this year’s fest will be “the best one yet,” says Reuben Salters, director of the Inner City Cultural League. “The Coasters will yakety yak, we’ll have a little bluegrass, Celtic music—we diversify—plus great merchandise and delectable food.” Several dignitaries are expected to grace the Grand Marche parade. Others will don ethnic garb, but, says Salters, “This is a fest for all people”—one that happens rain or shine. Call 736-0101, or visit icclarts.org.

Get Deep at the Natural History Museum

You won’t be under the sea at the Delaware Museum of Natural History, but you can hang in an octopus’ garden in the shade. The new exhibit, “Deep Sea Treasures,” which runs June 6 through October 4, “incorporates components that will engage the whole family,” says executive director Halsey Spruance. “Adults can learn about ongoing field research, older children can experience ocean exploration with hands-on activities, and toddlers can role play with plush sea creatures.” Call 658-9111, or visit delmnh.org.
