During his 15-year career with the Union Army, T. Glenn Layton, 59, has risen through the re-enactor ranks from private to captain and commanding officer of the 2nd Regiment Delaware Volunteers. “By now I’ve fought this war four times over,” he says, referring to the four-year duration of the Civil War.
Layton, of Wyoming, has ancestors who’ve lived in Delaware and Maryland for hundreds of years. It’s a badge of honor among re-enactors to lay claim to an ancestor who fought in the war. Layton hit the jackpot when he discovered that 10 of his forebears fought for the Union, including his great-great-grandfather and three sons. Ever since he learned about his family history, re-enacting has become a sacred mission.
“I feel a need to keep my family history alive,” he says.
