Bayhealth Medical Center
Bayhealth Medical Center formed in January 1997 when Kent General Hospital, founded in 1927, and Milford Memorial Hospital, founded in 1938, merged to create a not-for-profit health-care system dedicated to improving the health status of all members of the Bayhealth community.
Now central and southern Delaware’s largest health-care system, Bayhealth is comprised of Kent General and Milford Memorial Hospitals, Middletown Medical Center and numerous satellite facilities, with more than 2,900 employees and 430 physicians.
As a leader in providing superior patient care, Bayhealth continues to improve services, expand programs and reach out to new communities. This commitment to excellence has been recognized both statewide and nationwide.
HealthGrades, the nation’s leading health care ratings organization, presented Bayhealth with the 2009 clinical excellence award for overall critical care, placing Bayhealth’s clinical outcomes in the top 10 percent nationally for each recognized area of care. Bayhealth was also ranked Best in Delaware for cardiac surgery, for cardiology services, for overall critical care and for overall cardiac services. In 2008, Bayhealth was named one of the nation’s Distinguished Hospitals by J.D. Power and Associates for providing an “outstanding inpatient experience.”
Both Kent General and Milford Memorial hospitals offer support groups for patients and families dealing with conditions such as cancer and diabetes. Educational programs provide classes and information on tobacco cessation, childbirth, infant care, early pregnancy and more.
Both hospitals offer free weekly blood pressure and diabetes screenings and frequently provide free or low-cost screenings for breast, prostate, skin and colorectal cancers as well as stroke and osteoporosis assessments and health risk appraisals.
Residents may call Bayhealth’s Physician Referral Line at 1-866-Bay-Docs or visit www.bayhealth.org to find physicians and services to meet their needs.

Kent General Hospital is currently in the midst of a $168 million, 400,000 square foot expansion that will redefine the level of health care available to residents of central Delaware.
The expansion will consist of a new emergency department that will double the size of the existing facility with shell space for future growth, an integrated cancer center that will bring radiation and medical oncology together, a welcome center, a central utility building and a 375-car parking garage. Construction is expected to be complete in 2011.
Kent General Hospital offers a comprehensive array of services to central Delaware residents, including heart care, birth services, neonatal care, cancer care, inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical care, a 24-hour emergency department, and intensive, intermediate and coronary care.

Kent General’s two-story Women’s Center provides state-of-the-art women’s services and improves high-risk deliveries and critical care to neonatal infants. All maternity rooms are private.
Patients meeting certain criteria may also participate in Bayhealth’s cancer clinical trials. Kent General was the first facility in Delaware to offer IMRT treatment for certain cancers.
Diagnostic services include open MRI, PET CT, and general X-ray services. In March 2006, Bayhealth became the first medical facility in the region to offer an advanced technology for the screening and diagnosis of many illnesses and injuries, particularly heart disease.
