Don Ruth has repaired typewriters for 35 years. He’s most familiar with IBM, Swintec and Nakajima, but he can handle almost any brand. Any part—the carriage release lever, platen, platen knob, feed roller, ribbon reverse button, ribbon spool, paper table, platen, ribbon vibrator, shift key, space bar, typewheel, keytop, type guide—can break. How does Ruth do it? Slowly, he says. “I take pieces apart as needed. It all depends on the job.”
