Welcome to Delaware Today’s arts blog, the spot to dish on the many cultural opportunities available to Delaware audiences. We’ll cover as many genres as possible, and note great events offered by organizations large and small, in all three counties.

The Delaware Symphony Orchestra presents “Oz with Orchestra” at The Grand Opera House January 29-30. The original “The Wizard of Oz” will be shown on a large screen as the symphony, directed by David Amado, performs its score.

While the plot is full, it’s difficult to imagine “Oz” without the music. The music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg are legendary, of course, notably “Over the Rainbow,” which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1939. Herbert Stothart’s lush instrumental underscore won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Many of us can see the film on plasmas that offer superior sound, but there’s still no comparison to the energy of a live orchestra.

Consider introducing the young ones to classical music. They won’t forget the experience.

For Rent

The Wilmington Drama League offers “Rent” January 29-February 13.

“Rent” was groundbreaking in several ways. First, it brought AIDS to the forefront by detailing the lives of 1980s Bohemian artists who struggled with the disease. There are essentially eight characters whose lives collide at Christmas. Keep in mind that this is a musical—with intensely good songs to boot—the plot covers such topics as suicide, infidelity and alternative lifestyles.

The Drama League deserves kudos for taking on this important musical.

Note: For this production, a faux-brick wall will be a major part of the set. For donations of $10 or $15, the WDL is offering the opportunity for donors to write the name of loved ones who are living with, have succumbed to, or are affected by AIDS, HIV, or any other disease. The tax-deductible donations will benefit both the Wilmington Drama League and AIDS Delaware.
