VITAS was founded by a minister and a nurse in 1978 as an all-volunteer organization. We have been a leader in the American hospice movement, helping to define the standards of care for hospice and working to ensure that terminally ill patients and their families have ready access to effective end-of-life care.

We are part of the fabric of our community and are deeply committed to its well-being. VITAS Innovative Hospice Care ® of Delaware is accredited by the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP) and licensed by the State of Delaware in all three counties: New Castle, Kent and Sussex.

VITAS is experienced in using a variety of methods to control pain, reduce anxiety and provide medical, spiritual and emotional comfort. Rather than bring patients to us, we take our services to them in long term care facilities, private residences or assisted living communities. We coordinate closely with physicians, caregivers, spiritual advisors, families and friends to ensure patients’ optimal well-being.

At VITAS, we have developed the services, resources and solutions to help ensure that our patients in Delaware can remain at home. VITAS provides care for patients with a wide range of life-limiting diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, liver disease, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and AIDS.

All hospice organizations are reimbursed in the same way, so they do not compete on cost. Therefore, it is only the quality of service and spectrum of choices that differentiate one hospice from another.
