Dr. Joel Chodos has practiced GI medicine since 1985, most of that in private practice. In an age of large high volume practices, Dr. Chodos’s practice is different. He is the sole physician you see and the staff are two people, Arlene and Patty whom you get to know and have been here 9 and 8 years each. Real people answer the phone—no phone menus when the office is open.
Taking a careful history and physical exam before endoscopy or expensive procedures is where we start . A new patient visit is scheduled for 1 hour and followup a smaller amount. There is time to tell your story and have tests reviewed. Your active participation in your care is encouraged and necessary, so there are medical questions to answer in more than one or two word answers so he can figure out what is bothering you and how to solve it. Explaining your symptoms is important.
Some of the problems Dr. Chodos deals with are abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, heart burn, nausea, ulcers, colon cancer prevention, polyp removal and a variety of other GI issues. He does not take care of all GI disorders, but handles many.
When endoscopy is needed (exam of digestive tract with lighted flexible tube under sedation) these are done at the DOCS surgery center on Route 273 near Route 4, a very user friendly facility that has been in operation for 11 years.
Dr. Chodos has been voted to the Top Doc’s list of Delaware Today by other doctors seven times 1995, 2000, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2016.
Dr. Chodos personally calls you on the phone the night before and the night after an endoscopy.
The office has hours 9 AM to 4:45 PM. Endoscopy is done on Mondays and Fridays in the morning. Dr. Chodos is on call for his own patients 7 days a week via an automated answering service that can page him. Dr. Chodos does not do inpatient hospital work and limits himself to outpatient care. He is on the ambulatory (outpatient) staff at Christiana Hospital.
When you call Patty or Arlene will take a preliminary intake history over the phone which Dr. Chodos reviews. If the case is suitable for him an appt will be given. Occasionally a case is not appropriate for him and he will say so.
Most but not all insurances are accepted, less deductibles and copays. We do not double book appointments or overbook. Time reserved is for you exclusively.
