Christiana Care, a nonprofit leader in health care, has more than a 100-year tradition of providing a full range of high-quality health care to Delaware and surrounding communities. Christiana Care has two acute-care hospitals, Wilmington Hospital in downtown Wilmington and Christiana Hospital in the Stanton area. A free regular shuttle service transports patients and visitors between them.
With more than 10,000 employees, Christiana Care is the largest private employer in Delaware and the 10th largest employer in the Philadelphia region.
In their last fiscal year, Christiana and Wilmington hospitals admitted more than 55,000 patients, making them two of the busiest hospitals in the nation. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has designated the organization as a National Community Center of Excellence in Women's Health.
For the past two years, Christiana Care has received a Best Hospital ranking from US News & World Report and has been named a Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospital Performance Leader. Christiana Care has also won the Consumer Choice Award as top choice of health care providers for 13 straight years and has been named a Best in the Business employer by the News Journal for five consecutive years.
Christiana Care provided $37.7 million in charity care to area residents last year.
The Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, a regional cancer program, features today's most sophisticated diagnostic capabilities and advanced medical, surgical and radiation treatments. As one of only 14 National Cancer Institute-selected Community Cancer Center Programs in the United States, the Graham Cancer Center is making tremendous strides to speed research and raise the quality of care for minority and underserved patients. Christiana Care ranks among the national leaders in clinical cancer research, with nearly seven times the national average of patients enrolled in clinical studies of new methods of preventing, early detection of and treating cancer. More than 100 clinical trials are currently in progress.
The Eugene du Pont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute, on the grounds of a former du Pont estate, is the headquarters for Christiana Care's prevention and disease management programs. Preventive medicine features a wide variety of programs for exercise, nutrition, weight management and stress management. In addition, Christiana Care offers disease management programs for heart and vascular disease, asthma and diabetes.
Christiana Care's Visiting Nurse Association has been taking care of Delawareans at home since 1922. Christiana Care’s VNA is the state’s largest, most experienced home health care agency, with more than 265,000 home visits last year.
More than 1,400 doctors are affiliated with Christiana Care, which has a medical and surgical residency program affiliated with Jefferson Medical College of the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
