Mexican Cuisine Hits the Streets

Taco Reho doles out its namesake Mexican dish from a food truck in Rehoboth.

With French chops and So-Cal vibes, Billy Lucas is determined to elevate the humble taco in Rehoboth Beach. He is the chef and co-owner of Taco Reho, one of the first food trucks to roll its way toward southern Delaware. From a lot shared with Big Chill Surf Cantina and Liquid Surf Shop (19406 Coastal Hwy.), he plies traditional Mexican favorites (see: homemade corn tortillas) with experimental flourishes. The results vary from chipotle-and-tomato braised chicken tinga tacos and Baja-style halibut tacos to smoky duck mole tacos and Thai-inspired curry tacos. Taco Reho, which opened in September, is the latest stop in a twisty culinary career for Lucas. He worked at beach-area restaurants like Nage and Espuma before heading to Los Angeles, where he caught on with Latitude 45 Catering, a company that specializes in feeding high-profile musicians on tour like Fleetwood Mac and Miley Cyrus. He also trained under famed chef Thomas Keller. His truck—wrapped in guitars, skulls and rock ’n’ roll imagery—is the culmination of his journey. “The truck is like your billboard,” Lucas says. “What your identity is going to be.”
