There’s no place we’d rather go for cannoli. Papa’s Pastry Shop makes them best,
with perfectly blistered shells and butter-smooth sweet mascarpone. That’s to say
nothing of the cakes and cookies—all stellar.
You can’t go wrong with any of the selections, but the macaroons, almond cookies and fruit-filled butter cookies are musts.
Long lines form at the Wilmington Italian Festival when Papa’s Pastry Shop cuts the rum cake. Owner Nanik Oei uses chiffon as the base for the triple-layer doozie, which is interrupted by layers of vanilla cream and chocolate cream. The cake is soaked in Bacardi, then topped with almond butter cream and slivered almonds.
