Dover Air Force Base Firefighters Plan a 9/11 Memorial near the Air Mobility Command Museum: The Memorial Will include Steel Beams from the World Trade Center in New York City

One way or another, firefighters at Dover Air Force Base plan to honor those affected by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The firefighters’ project to build a memorial at the base has hit its share of snags during the past year, says dispatcher Patti Bunch, but regardless of the memorial’s physical status, some sort of ceremony will be held on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. “The memorial could be finished or it might be a groundbreaking,” she says.

Eventually, a monument featuring two steel support beams from the World Trade Center, a Pentagon shape and soil from the United Airlines Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania will be erected in the memorial garden at the base’s Air Mobility Command Museum. It will be open to the public.

“The whole point behind this is to be all-inclusive,” says Bunch. “It’s not just about firefighters. It’s honoring all the people from not only that day, but who are still being affected daily because of what happened.”

Brick pavers with up to three lines of text are being sold to cover expenses. The pavers will be included in the memorial. —Drew Ostroski
