dress expectations Shopping for your bridal gown is like shopping for nothing else. This isnt a quick jaunt to the mall. Youll need at least a solid hour-and-a-half and a strapless bra for the excursion. Be sure to wear casual clothing that can be removed easily. You dont want to have to struggle with the straps and Lycra of your latest couture top between gowns.
Barbara Henderson, sales consultant at Bridal and Tuxedo Shoppe in Newark, suggests wearing a strapless bra. About 60 percent of our dresses are strapless, she says. So most of them require a strapless bra. If you dont have one that fits, thats OK. Bridal salons have some that you can use. They also have slips, which are recommended regardless of the dress girth. Even though it may have many layers, a slip helps the dress keep its shape, she says.
The one thing you dont have to worry about is footwear. Nearly all salons have heels of varying heights to give their customers a realistic idea of what the gown looks like with shoes. Many salons, including the Bridal and Tuxedo Shoppe, also have platforms you can stand on to visualize the dress post-alterations. For many brides, the dresses puddle around their feet without the platform. Most dresses are supposed to be for a 5-foot-7 woman with 2-inch heels, Henderson says. But its more like for someone who is 5-foot-9 with a 2-inch heel.
Expect to have a sales assistant dress you. The task of putting on a bridal gown alone could be enough to stop even the most capable brides. Gowns usually weigh about 8 pounds, but can often go much higher. Add the cumbersome layers and confusing straps, and youd make better progress getting into a straight jacket alone. The staff will hold a dress over your head, and drop it, then drape it around your body.
A bridal gown is not the easiest thing to get into, Henderson says.
