In March, Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club awarded A Hero’s Wedding to Specialists Suzette Lynn Van Pelt and Joseph B. Gayder of the Delaware Army National Guard. In August, they married.

Deerfield manager Jeff Robinson created A Hero’s Wedding to reward a special couple. The idea caught on right away among wedding vendors who could barely wait to offer their services.

“When we first began this program back in December, I anticipated an arduous process of seeking vendors willing to make such a big commitment,” Jeff says. “I was pleasantly surprised how quickly our friends in the industry agreed to help.”

Suzette and Joseph served in the 153rd Military Police Unit in Iraq in 2007 and 2008. “Both suffered the constant pounding of mortar fire, the uncertainty of possible death or injury from an IED or rocket-propelled grenade on the road, and the many horrors of war,” says Patricia Woosley of the Wilmington VA Hospital, who nominated them. “Each has earned multiple medals and ribbons in their military careers.”

For their dedication to our country, we thank them. For their commitment to each other, we congratulate them.
