The Other Planner

A pro can be helpful, but there’s no better help than your intended.

The next best thing to a professional wedding planner could be right under your nose—your fiancé. The fiancé often wants to be involved but doesn’t know what to do. The best solution is to simply ask him.

“Most men are interested in helping out with food, music and transportation,” says Leanne Silicato of Make My Day Event Planning in Rehoboth Beach, “so start early and keep him busy.”

TRANSPORTATION Research vendors and make appointments to view vehicles. Determine how many people you need to transport and how long you will need transportation, then make a budget.

FOOD Most men can’t say no to food tastings. Meet with chefs and caterers to choose your menu or with a mixologist to create a signature cocktail for the reception.

MUSIC Have him generate a song list. The groom-to-be may enjoy choosing songs for announcements and dancing. Make sure you agree on the song for your first dance—you’ll remember it for the rest of your life.

FASHION Though everyone will be looking at you on the big day, make sure your groom and his groomsmen are stylish and comfortable. Choose styles you both like. Leave the fittings to him.

HONEYMOON Discuss the destination, then leave the researching of activities, booking hotels and travel details to him. Your honeymoon will truly feel like a vacation.

“Don’t make him suffer through things he doesn’t want to do. Make a game plan of what interests him, and ask his opinion on a few things even if he isn’t involved in them,” says Samantha Diedrick of Secretariat Wedding and Event Planning in Wilmington. “Grooms like to see what is being done and have approval.”
