Kids’ Corner

At every reception, they need a special place.

Entertainment for the young ones at your reception can result in happy kids and happy parents. Children will feel like part of the party if they’re included but also have their own special room nearby where they can head when they’re craving the company of their peers, says florist Mary McVeigh (flowersbymaryelizabeth.com).
McVeigh helped with a wedding at Raskob Mansion on the campus of Archmere Academy in Claymont, where the library was turned into a playroom. The location leant itself well to the purpose. “It has a bathroom next to it, and the room is right next to the reception room,” McVeigh says. When the playroom is on-site, kids can wander in when they get bored and still have easy access to their parents. Parents get a short break.
“I have also seen magicians and craft people that are hired for a few hours to entertain the kids and let the adults have a few dances,” McVeigh says.
Wedding photographer Becca Rahn has seen it all. “I had a bride do a kids’ room at her reception, with activities like coloring and games, a snack bar and babysitters,” Rahn says. “And I have seen a musician. That was pretty entertaining.”
Another option is to make party baskets filled with toys and games for the kids. Label the baskets with the recipient’s name and put them on the table where guests pick up their place cards.
If you’d rather not have children at your reception but choose to accommodate them, Melissa DiRocco of Wilmington suggests renting a hotel room near the reception site, hiring a babysitter, and providing movies and popcorn. —Katie Ginder-Vogel
