The scoop: This intimate 15-room fieldstone inn has been greeting guests since 1728—and like the town of Middleburg, it epitomize cozy. In the heart of Virginia’s wine and hunt country at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, both are beautiful any time of year, but they’re especially picturesque in winter. A young George Washington visited the tavern, and the building was a Confederate headquarters and hospital during the Civil War. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was a frequent guest at The Red Fox during fall foxhunting season, and Elizabeth Taylor often dined there.
Amenities: A full order-off-the-menu breakfast is included with an overnight stay. For lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, the on-site tavern is a local favorite. The Night Fox Pub is the perfect place to relax over a beer or cocktail.
Don’t miss: Middleburg celebrates Christmas Dec. 4-6 in a big way. It attracts over 10,000 visitors and includes a mile-long parade of about 100 horses and red-coated riders, and dozens of hunting dogs. There’s also a tree-lighting ceremony and a holiday wine crawl. You can take care of your gift list at the town’s many boutiques, antiques shops and galleries.
