The ABC Delaware Construction Education Foundation of Delaware, a 501 (c)3 subsidiary, dedicated to the future of the construction industry, presented its annual scholarship award to Michael Brereton of Hodgson Vo-Tech High School during the May 1 awards dinner in Newark. The scholarship program is for students graduating from high school who are continuing their education at a post-secondary institution in a construction-related field. The scholarship is available to dependents of employees who work for ABC Delaware member companies or graduating students from a vo-tech high school. The winner receives $1,000, which is renewable each year for four years, as long as he/she is still in a construction-related field and carries a 2.75 GPA. Brereton, a senior at Hodgson and a member of the National Honor Society, will graduate with a 3.86 grade point average. He will attend the University of Delaware in the fall and major in Civil Engineering. Brereton was involved in many activities at Hodgson, some of which included participating in the ACE mentoring program for two years and the ABC Student Chapter. He was the statewide winner in Skills USA competition for architecture for two consecutive years and was also first in the state in the Trig-Star competition in 2013. He was a member of the cross country, indoor track and lacrosse teams at Hodgson. He has participated in volunteer activities with Habitat for Humanity and Blessings for Dressings, which distributes food to disadvantaged families. For the past two years, he has worked through the district co-op program with ABC member companies, Quality Heating and Air Conditioning and Karins Associates.
