Many people like to keep their philanthropy local. But if you are wondering about national charities and nonprofits, the Better Business Bureau publishes twice a year its Wise Giving Guide. It lists major national charities and rates them, based on 20 criteria. If the charity meets all of the BBB’s standards, the guide will say that. If the charity does not comply with any, the guide specifies which ones are not up to snuff. A third column will tell you if a review is in progress.
