The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces the next play in the exciting series of National Theatre Live screenings. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that presents the best of British theater live from the London stage on film to cinemas across the UK and around the world.
Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical, FOLLIES, is staged for the first time at the National Theatre. Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies girls in this dazzling new production. The play features a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21. The original Broadway production was the winner of seven Tony® awards.
It’s New York, 1971, and there’s a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves. They sing and dance their old numbers and confront past regrets and misplaced hopes. This is a look at the decay of American show business and the dangers of living in the past.
“The Independent” gives the production 5 stars and says it is “jaw-droppingly great.” “Metro” proclaims it is “a perfect production” and “The Guardian” states “Imelda Staunton is unforgettable in Sondheim’s showbiz stunner.” [Rated: PG-13, Runtime: 2 hrs. & 36 min., with no intermission). *Please note that this performance of FOLLIES includes strobe lighting.
Screenings will be 12:30 pm on Saturday, January 20th, 12:30 pm on Monday, January 22nd and
6:00 pm on Tuesday, January 23rd at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). Admission for National Theatre Live is $18 for RBFS members, $20 general admission and $15 for ages 16 and under.
