The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces the next play in the exciting series of National Theatre Live screenings. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that presents the best of British theater live from the London stage on film to cinemas across the UK and around the world.
Internationally acclaimed theater director Yaël Farber draws on multiple accounts to create her urgent, hypnotic production of SALOME on the stage of the National Theatre. The story has been told before, but never like this. An occupied desert nation. A radical from the wilderness on a hunger strike. A girl whose mysterious dance will change the course of the world. This charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on its head, placing the girl we call Salomé at the center of a revolution.
Her story shows how Rome’s suppression of the people and religion of Judea acted as a catalyst in her transformation from subjugated young girl to the woman who came to be known as Salomé. The production looks amazing – with restlessly rotating stages, slow-mo physicality, cinema-epic robes and the aura of antiquity. The design is opulent and grandiose, with the staging often looking like a living painting. It stars an international cast of actors and features beautiful singing throughout.
“Independent” states, “Yaël Farber proves that she does riveting ritual intensity better than anyone else.” And “Sunday Times” says “SALOME is a beautiful, mesmerizing production. A bold new interpretation.” (Rated: R, Runtime 2 hours, with no intermission).
Screenings will be on Monday, August 14h at 1:00 pm and Tuesday, August 15th at 6:30 pm at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). Admission for National Theatre Live is $18 for RBFS members, $20 general admission and $15 for ages 16 and under.
