The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation are proud to present The Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s timeless drama, IDOMENEO on Saturday, March 25, 12:55 pm at Cape Henlopen High School Theater.
Mozart’s operatic masterpiece returns to the Met in the classic Jean-Pierre Ponnelle production, conducted by Met Music Director James Levine. This Greek myth tells the story of the king of Crete, Idomeneo, whose ship gets into distress during his return from the Trojan War. To survive, he vows to the god Poseidon to sacrifice the first man he encounters after his rescue. He is horrified when the first human he comes across is his beloved son, Idamante. Considered Mozart’s greatest choral opera, IDOMENEO explores the emotions of humans whose fates seem beyond their control. The superb ensemble includes Matthew Polenzani as Idomeneo – the king torn by a rash vow; mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of his noble son Idamante; soprano Nadine Sierra as Ilia; and soprano Elza van den Heever as the volatile Elettra, who loves Idamante to the bounds of madness. There will be two intermissions. [2017, Sung in Italian with subtitles, Runtime: 3 hours 58 minutes]
In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings.
