“Eclectic Artist of the South” offers vibrant paintings and reflections of Jewish Heritage''

Nationally known artist and writer, Susan (Shoshannah) Adler George brings her works to The Siegel JCC ArtSpace in Wilmington, Delaware. The exhibition, Painted Paradoxes, opening in November, will feature paintings that reflect the artist’s search for her Jewish roots, and is a tribute to her unique mother and the vibrant stories she shared that led to the artistic exploration of the Artists’ Jewish heritage from their arrival to America from Germany, as well offering as an eclectic array of abstract, expressionistic paintings from her current collection.

“Some of the work in Painting Paradoxes illustrates the stories her mother told her about her Jewish family, which she crafted as if she were a child at her mother’s knee.  Other paintings evoke the paradoxes she [Susan George] sees in other aspects of life.” Kerin Hearn, ArtSpace committee member.

“I feel the rhythm of life’s paradoxes as if they were choreographed dances morphing into paintings. My work is a dialogue with myself and the world. Much of what I see is absurd or senseless, but true. Painting abstractly or symbolically is my way of reasoning with paradoxes.”  Susan (Shoshannah) Adler George

As published in the J-Voice of Delaware, “Susan (Shoshannah) Adler George was a lonely only child who intensely felt and keenly observed and “listened to” the world around her. When she was five, her family moved to rural Maryland into a fairy tale cottage, designed by her mother and hand-built by her father. Her first memory of creating art was grabbing handfuls of clay from a bank to shape into the animals she saw in her yard.  Music and Dance were great influences in her life. Her mother enrolled her at age 9 with the well-known dancer, Estelle Dennis, and later at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, under Dale Shenert a Martha Graham dancer.  Susan spent most of her adult life as an artist in Baltimore. She was greatly influenced by the large spatial visuals of the diverse architecture, the brilliance of the art of Matisse, Egon Schiele and others in its many museums. She studied poetry under the renowned poet Andrei Codrescu and taught classes to children in many venues.

It was in Baltimore that she began depicting her Jewish roots through her art and writing. Her mother was Jewish, but raised her in Christian Science, the religion of her English/German father. Her mother was a great storyteller and filled Susan’s head with colorful family tales of her Jewish ancestors—their arrival in the 1800’s and decades of life in Baltimore.  She loved to remind Susan of her Jewish background while inserting Yiddish sayings into her everyday speech. And, thus began the major paradox of Susan’s life—was she Jewish or not Jewish, how did the pieces and fragments of her life add up to form her as an adult artist.

Susan recently moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where she quickly gained a reputation as “the eclectic artist of the South” earning awards and exhibits and is published in many poetry journals including Heron Clan and the internationally recognized Three Rooms Press, Maintenant Dada Journal
