GroupThink Curated by Lauren Gidwitz Pierre S. du Pont Arts Center Gallery 2813 West 17th Street Wilmington, DE 19806 February 1 – 22, 2013 Opening Reception: Friday, February 1, 6 – 8 pm As artists, we sometimes cluster together, in order to refuel our ideas and agree or contest each other’s thoughts. While at other times we push apart and retreat into our own worlds to gain space and pursue a solitary path. The studio-based graduate experience is a curious study into what occurs when a group, without previous contact, is pulled together into an incubatorial environment, where their own practices push and pull on one another. The exhibition, GroupThink, dissects the resulting dynamics of the clustering of individuals in the graduate program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and what happens when these forces become reflected in their own work. As clusters, series, groupings, and grids of work pulse out of each artist’s own installation, one wall will be reserved to create an exploratory piece utilizing one small work from each artist, to probe the energies of the conversation when they are all pulled together. GroupThink includes work from both current MFA candidates and recent alumni, working in paint, printmaking, photography, fabric, thread, paper, and found-objects. Artists: Jannalyn Bailey, Philippa Beardsley, Jenna Buckingham, Virginia Fleming, Yoni Hamburger, Matthew Herzog, Bong Mee Lee, Adam Lovitz, Samantha Mitchell |
