The Harsh Reality

The biophysical age of inmates is 10 to 15 years older than their chronological age. A typical 45-year-old prisoner is like a 60-year-old, due to more drug abuse, alcohol, smoking and other lifestyle choices than is apparent in the general population. There is also more physical and mental trauma, mental illness and chronic stress, lack of regular preventive health care, and medical non-compliance, according to the 2007 book “Public Health Behind Bars.”
