All in Good Taste

You don’t have to travel all the way to South America to taste outstanding wines.

Eric Miller, founding proprietor of Chaddsford Winery, recommends wines from the following wineries, which should be available locally:

Argentine wineries

  • Catena Zapata. “Probably one of the main reasons Argentine wines are getting chic.” Try the 2008 Alta Malbec and the 2007 Nicolás Catena Zapata, a Malbec blend.
  • Clos de los Siete. “Really good and well-priced wines.” Recommended Cabernet blends include the 2009 Clos de los Siete, 2008 DiamAndes de Uco and 2008 Chevalier de los Andes.
  • Familia Zuccardi. This winery’s “impeccable wines” include the 2008 Q Cabernet Sauvignon and the Malamado Malbec, “an extraordinary dessert wine.”
  • Trapiche. Higher end Malbecs like the 2008 Viña Jorge Miralles and the 2008 Viña Christina y Biliana Coletto are “thrilling.”

Chilean wineries

  • J. Bouchon. “A winery to watch.” Check out its 2010 Carménère or a value Malbec blend like the 2008 Las Mercedes Ensamblaje.
  • François Lurton. This winery exports from both Argentina and Chile.  “A forward-thinking winery in transition to organic vineyards.”
  • Viu Manent. This winery in Colchagua has a new line of wines called Secreto. “Their Sauvignon Blanc was one of the best I had in Chile.”
