Student Ethics Scholarships: 2015 Recipients
by Larry Nagengast
Each year the Better Business Bureau Serving Delaware’s Education Foundation awards two $2,500 scholarships to deserving graduates of Delaware high schools. Judges evaluate entrants on their leadership, contributions to their communities and schools, personal integrity, academic accomplishments and an essay on business ethics.
The 2015 recipients, David Woodside of Appoquinimink High School, and Devin Miller of Caesar Rodney High School, are already off to successful starts in their college careers.
Woodside is attending Tulane University in New Orleans, La., where he is pursuing dual degrees in business management and political economy. He has been accepted into Tulane’s highly selective Altman Program in International Studies and Business, which will provide him the opportunity to study abroad in two significantly different cultures—in Hanoi, Vietnam, and in Reims and Paris, France.
“The Better Business Bureau of Delaware allowed me to meet many prominent leaders in Delaware through their annual celebration,” Woodside says. “I cannot thank the BBB enough for the opportunities that they have provided me.”
Miller says the scholarship not only made it possible for her to enroll in the University of Delaware but it also helped her complete her first year without accruing any student debt, a significant accomplishment for someone who describes herself as “a first-generation, low-income student.” She was accepted into the university’s Honors Program, where she is majoring in marketing and hopes to amass the credits needed for a second major in operations management. “I hope my future career finds me interacting and working with or in accordance with the principles of the Better Business Bureau of Delaware,” she says.
The 2016 scholarship program has two corporate sponsors, Hopkins & Sons Moving and Storage and the Martin Dealerships of Delaware. This year’s scholarship winners will be announced at the BBB’s Annual Celebration on April 28 at the World Cafe Live at the Queen.
