About Us

TODAY MEDIA, INC. HISTORY

Welcome to Today Media, Suburban Publishing, Spotlight Publications and Media Two. Our family of companies has a tradition of excellence in publishing stretching back more than 135 years.

In 1864 in Yonkers, New York, the Yonkers Democratic Publication Association launched a weekly newspaper, the Yonkers Herald. In the ensuing years, the company produced weekly and daily newspapers, published historical papers, and changed its name to the Yonkers Gazette. When the Yonkers Gazette merged with Meadow Brothers Press in 1896, Gazette Press was born. By 1922, Gazette Press ceased publication of newspapers to concentrate on the printing business.

The company continued to grow, and in 1948 Angelo R. Martinelli and Harvey W. Steinberg purchased Gazette Press. At that time, Angelo was business manager of the Yonkers Times newspaper, which was published by his brothers James and Ralph. Angelo became sole owner of Gazette in 1957, and by the 1960s had led Gazette into becoming one of the leading commercial printers in Westchester County. In the1970s, Gazette expanded by creating Hudson Valley magazine, a lifestyle publication covering New York State from Westchester to Albany. Angelo's son Ralph is the current publisher of Hudson Valley.

As Gazette Press prepared to celebrate its centennial, the premiere issue of Delaware Today magazine hit the newsstands in 1962. Building on the foundation of three previous publications, the New Delawarean, Delaware Cavalcade, and Dateline Delaware, Delaware Today provides regional lifestyle coverage to the entire state. It is one of the oldest city and regional magazines in the country. In contrast to the majority, which began as publications by chambers of commerce, Delaware Today has always been independently owned. In 1981 Angelo Martinelli, who’s Gazette Press had been printing the magazine, purchased Delaware Today and his son Robert became publisher.

Thus, the Martinelli family has been publishing Delaware Today for longer than any other owners, and during their tenure, the company has grown dramatically. Since 1981, the staff of the magazine has expanded from 10 to more than 45 employees. Additionally, sales revenue has increased over 1000% and circulation rates have more than doubled. Delaware Today now publishes three ancillary publications – Ultimate Guide to Delaware (Annual); Delaware Health and Fitness (3 times per year); Delaware Bride (2 time per year).

The Martinelli’s created a custom publishing division, Suburban Marketing Associates, in 1989 with the purchase of a map company. They soon expanded this business into doing publications for other organizations like Delaware Lawyer and the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau.   In 1995 they launched Main Line Today magazine, a regional lifestyle publication covering the historic Main Line suburbs of Philadelphia. In 1999 the Martinelli’s incorporated Today Media as the parent company for Delaware Today, Main Line Today and the custom publishing division. In 2000, the family purchased Westchester, NY magazine, published by Angelo's son Ralph Martinelli and The Hunt magazine covering life in the Brandywine Valley. In 2001, the family purchased Media Two a company in Baltimore, Maryland that exclusively focuses on Custom Publishing. Currently, the company is focusing expanding their core businesses and developing their web sites.
